http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/

--> Notices by forest service for Coronado National Forest

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/12/03/us/AP-US-Child-Tasered.html?_r=1

--> Another kid gets tasered. Perhaps a lot of this could be prevented if parents would stop trying to be friends and buddies and start acting like... parents. Corporal punishment works if applied at an early life stage. Establish parental authority and then other punishment options become meaningful.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,579038,00.html

--> Desperate times call for desperate actions... and some charitable mercy. It is sad that most times things don't work out this way. How many crooks faced with their eminent demise won't give a sob story? How many panhandlers are suddenly out of gas? At the same spot every day? There are many many many resources out there for people in need, but people don't seek them out. They choose the wrong path because it is "easy".

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/12/03/coke-tries-facial-recognition-on-facebook/

--> I think I'll upload a picture of a Klingon.

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/prod2.nr0.htm

--> Productivity is up. Productivity is output divided by hours worked. So, mathematically, as hours worked approaches zero, then productivity approaches infinity. Therefore, all employees should be fired! This theory does seem to coincide with the INCREASE in unemployed.

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=9237798

--> Global warming data to be re-examined as UK university conducts investigation. Perhaps some doctoral thesis will be invalidated?

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5grllk_nt63q2NPIotyM9xpL4hwkwD9CBTA0O0

--> No same-sex marriage for New York.

http://www.computerworlduk.com/community/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=2673

--> Malware/Virus infected Windows-based PCs can take down a network, even if it is using Linux-based servers. The server won't get infected but the network gets overloaded and shuts down. Why are we all still using Windows and not Linux or Mac?

http://www.nuxified.org/blog/again-linux-not-os

--> A very interesting argument. Linux is not an OS. Linux is a kernel. The OS is the framework built around the kernel. That means that Ubuntu is an OS. Slackware is an OS. OpenSUSE is an OS. Red Hat Fedora is an OS. Mandriva is an OS. Linux is NOT an OS. But what use is the framework without the kernel? Isn't the OS the software interface to the hardware? Isn't the OS the software that manages the tasks, memory usage, and communication stacks? But I think that in terms of marketing, it is more true to say that the distributions are an OS, and not the kernel. You are bound to have problems trying to install a Debian packaged software on Fedora due to dependency differences. Technically, it isn't the kernel at fault, but how the framework interfaces to it. However, this won't be understood by most people. They'll just see the incompatibility. Thus the distributions should be conceptually treated like separate OS's.

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/12/03/0616246

--> Incomplete drug and illegal smuggling tunnel found on US-Mexico border.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/12/03/shishmaref.alaska.climate.change/index.html

--> Time. To. Move. Adapt or die. Don't be a dinosaur. The world is a dynamic place and people need to learn to dance to the rhythm. Seriously... How intact is their pristine native culture? They were forced to adapt before and adjusted. It is time to do it again.

http://www.boingboing.net/2009/12/02/from-the-toilet-to-t.html

--> You are drinking recycled water.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18225-both-of-nasas-mars-orbiters-are-down-for-the-count.html

--> Mars has gone radio silent. The orbiters are down. Little green men with slingshots?

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18224-longlived-titan-lakes-are-boon-to-life.html

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18231-antarctica-was-climate-refuge-during-great-extinction.html

--> Antarctica should have some incredible fossil finds - herbivores, trees, ... now if we could just get rid of all that ice... Hmmm... Animals migrate when the weather is no longer favorable? Really? You mean Nature can take care of itself?!?!

http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2009/12/03/warren-buffett-on-sex.aspx

--> Sex and investing in the stock market have a lot of similarities... besides getting screwed.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,579070,00.html

--> Girl who sneezes 12,000 times a day officially diagnosed with having PANDAS.

http://paidcontent.org/article/419-world-press-collective-delusion-boils-over-respect-us-dammit/

--> World press blaming their failings on Google.

http://defensetech.org/2009/12/02/terrorists-within-our-borders/

--> Leave it to Defense Tech to pull out the juicy bits of Obama's speech. People are afraid of terrorists coming over here. Fact: they already are. The Left wants to restrict options on the government to detect them and are driven by political correctness. How politically correct are dead Americans killed in their own country while ... say... Christmas shopping?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8318708.stm

--> Terrorist caught in Boston, Mass. before he could kill people in a shopping mall. Perhaps buying online is a good choice these days.

http://www.reuters.com/article/gc05/idUSTRE5B248720091203

--> Imagine that... The Commander In Chief being vague about his war strategy. I suppose if the Dems in Congress were really interested in troop movements they could always ask Geraldo Rivera.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34256255/ns/us_news-life/

--> Whew! Christmas is saved and damn the tree! Missing couple turn up alive and well.

http://blogs.reuters.com/globalinvesting/2009/12/03/time-to-kick-russia-out-of-the-brics/

--> Russia is not the economic powerhouse it used to be

http://www.time.com/time/travel/article/0,31542,1944681,00.html

--> Nomblot Egg is the new hot item for vintners. It is better than an oak cask in that it does not impart tannins. It is better than stainless in that it allows for oxygenation. I'll have to locate some and try it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/03/AR2009120302143.html?hpid=moreheadlines

--> Don't worry, the White House only hires empty suits. (reference to last sentence)

http://www.reuters.com/article/asianCurrencyNews/idUSN0310913720091203

--> US economic policy is intended to address economic policy in the US? Then why did so much TARP money go overseas, Mr Bernanke? What happened to your globalist views, Mr Bernanke? I believe you are running the economy on expediency and not actual needs.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1945341,00.html

--> "Audit the Fed!" should be your new mantra. Say it with me. "Audit the Fed!"

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,579158,00.html

--> Glen Beck interview transcripts regarding the Global Warming scandal. It is interesting in that there is so little content.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,488205,00.html

--> Unite or die. As this country is a secular government, I am not sure of the need for item two other than to say you believe in a power greater then The State. One goal of Communism and Socialism is to make The State into the ultimate authority.

http://www.jeremiahproject.com/culture/10-planks-of-communism.html

--> 10 Planks of Communism: The USA has fully enacted items 1 (thanks again, Justice Souter), 2, 4 (you can have your laptop or other items seized at the border upon entry to the US, and the IRS has performed audits of people that spoke out against the Clintons, and let's not forget Waco and the Branch Davidians where the only shots fired were by the Government), 6 (we have the DOT and FCC), and 10. Note the lack of a mention of religion (as I mentioned above), however, in a totalitarian regime, which the Socialist path always degrades to, religion becomes a tool of The State (refer to China and Soviet Russia).

"Lenin was right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." - John Maynard Keynes

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/02/task-force-apologizes-controversy-mammography-recommendations/

--> The government task force that recommended against annual mammograms says "Oops. Sorry." Their position has not changed. Meanwhile, a lady working my cafeteria at work will be undergoing chemotherapy in two weeks. She is an older lady. Fortunately, she wasn't following the new government task force guidelines.

--> Goldman Sachs bankers are packing heat these days. They fear a populist uprising. They think too much of themselves. If - Heaven forbid - there is a violent uprising of The People, it will be the government that is tarred and feathered. An intersting note: "The bailout was meant to keep the curtain drawn on the way the rich make money, not from the free market, but from the lack of one. ". As I pointed out yesterday, capitalism has not failed since we never had it in the first place.

--> "nothing in normal space can go faster than light, but if you can do funny things to space, you can go faster than light." I remember in the old RPG Traveller that the fastest way to send a message was not radio or laser, but a courier ship with a jump drive, since they could travel faster than the speed of light. The future may be full of envelopes. Hmmm... Alexandrite... Maybe use it in combination with another lasing material to create a charge pump? The photons that get spit back go into another lasing crystal that acts as a charge pump and dumps the light back out at a new wavelength. This would allow a light source with a broader bandwidth to become a laser or just change its spectral content.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/12/how-the-robber-barons-hijacked-the-victorian-internet.ars

--> Space power... I am dubious on the idea of microwaving the planet. Also, having a laser in space powerful enough to transmit power is equally scary. Either technology could be weaponized in short order. It would be devastating.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34241415/ns/technology_and_science-science/

--> AZ school school district IT director fired for using SETI@Hiome on school computers. Officials claim it will take $1,000,000 to remove the software from the 5000 computers. HORSECRAP!!! I have used SET@Home and it is benign. There is NO WAY that it would cost $1 million to remove that software. A simple admin script would do it. It could be done in a couple of days (assuming some computers were not turned on and need to be found and powered on). If SETI bogged down anything, then that was because the priority settings were set too high. This is another case of government bureaucrats lack of understanding of technology. Or is it? With AZ so far in the deficit hole, I think this guy was railroaded so the district could claim damages and get more money via emergency funding or lawsuit.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/china-business/6712676/China-wary-of-gold-bubble-danger-after-quietly-doubling-its-reserves.html

--> The recent rise in the price of gold is probably not going to last.

http://www.kitco.com/ind/Wieg_cor/roger_dec12009.html

--> Inflation is good for the debtor, but not the lender. If inflation occurs, the debts are still fixed and become smaller in value. For example, if a mortgage has $100,000, and income is $60,000, but then say, hyper-inflation happens, more money needs to be printed, and then paid to keep up with the cost of living. So pretend a 200% inflation, the income rises to $240,000, but the house is still only $100,000 and is easier to pay off for the cost of spare change. This economic prediction article paints in broad brushes and extremes in hue.

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/12/conservatism-and-the-climate.html

--> Unclear on the concept - there is a difference between "environmental conservation" and "Political Conservatism". Andrew Sullivan is trying to draw a false connection between the two based on the same root word having two different meanings (see yesterday's link to false arguments). I can do the same with Democrat and democracy. The Democrats are simply NOT interested in democracy, but are politically aligned with Socialism instead. Also, this illustrates the attitude of so many neo-conservationists belief in a static Earth environmental model. Political and environmentally, these types go against nature - human, and environmental. When you train a dog, you work with the nature of the dog to use inherent skills in novel ways. The laws and policies of the Liberals go against human nature and assume an ideal and rational human model. Humans are anything but rational. Their idea for Nature is similar in that they intend to bend the planet to their will (limit heating by 2 degrees C, i. e.) instead of working within the system and relocating farmland from arid areas to more amenable locales, changing the way we build cities, and houses, etc.

--> alpha can be used to see if a company is on the up and up

http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2009/12/01/the-morals-of-bailouts/

--> I stopped reading at this point: "... Dubai is simply defaulting on its non-recourse underwater loans in accordance with the amoral principles of capitalism." Felix Salmon has the brains of a fish. He clearly does not understand capitalism. Defaulting on loans and walking away Scot free is NOT part of capitalism; it is a violation of it. Capitalism is NOT an "anything for a buck" system. This is the typical attitude of so many Leftists that decry that capitalism is a failure. What failure they are seeing is the result of NOT following capitalism. Furthermore, NO ONE alive has seen capitalism - pure capitalism does not exist. It, like communism, is an ideal that can never be reached due to human nature. It is this human nature that corrupts these systems and turns communism into a murderous and oppressive totalitarian regime, and twists capitalism to develop sweatshops for children and corporate oligarchies (which is what we are headed toward). Both capitalism and communism work only in theory, and only on paper. Capitalism can be approached, and that is a worthy goal, but human nature must be taken into account when striving and that is one reason we have so many government regulations - the mistaken idea by a few that "anything not illegal is lawful". A prime example of this attitude can be found when Al Gore accepted campaign contributions from the Chinese and was caught, but was not punished as, "there is no governing body".

And I take exception to referring to GIMP as a niche product. Later in the article, the author praises it as a "serious contender" to other professional graphic editors. That doesn't sound like "niche" to me. The problem turns out that GIMP is too advanced for Ubuntu and they are seeking something simpler for their default install.

Do believe that the government will not pay for procedures beyond what the Task Force recommends.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,576826,00.html

--> The inclusion of the "get rid of breast self-exams" could be a red herring. Or it may just be that the Task Force is right in saying all these checks are not really helpful. Sharon Begley seems to put a price on life. Exams for1300 women for a decade saves one life. What is the price for life? I think one of the problems with the health care price debate is that people are arguing for a lowering of ALL costs on all procedures. That is not feasible. I think there can be a lowering of costs on certain procedures, but not likely across the board.

--> Government for sale. If the health care bill is so great, WHY is it so hard to get the representatives to support it? Why won't Congress and the Senate use it instead of their own plan? "Providing improved health care access to all Americans is a worthy goal. I predict that the greatest impact of this bill, however, will be to put a greater and greater portion of the people’s resources in the hands of people who will misuse them like Reid has done."

Thomas Jefferson quotes:
---

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.

---

Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.

---

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

---

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.

---

I have no ambition to govern men; it is a painful and thankless office.

---

I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion.

---

I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it.

---

If the present Congress errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send one hundred and fifty lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, and talk by the hour?

---

It is always better to have no ideas than false ones; to believe nothing, than to believe what is wrong.

---

It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.

---

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.

---

Politics is such a torment that I advise everyone I love not to mix with it.

Power is not alluring to pure minds.

---

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add “within the limits of the law” because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

---

Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.

---

That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves.

---

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

---

The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive.

---

Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.

Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on offices, a rottenness begins in his conduct.

Fathers sacrifice as much as the woman... working crappy jobs because the pay is good, skipping that nice business trip to some fancy convention because their wife needs them at home, neglecting their own hobbies to take over child rearing for their wife to give her a moment of respite. Never a mention of how while children are in daycare or school that the housewife has gobs of free time to pursue pretty much whatever. The father? No. No free time. There is only the daily banal hell of slowly having his self ground into dust of what once was - dreams, hopes, aspirations wilt like an unpicked rose. Having been an at home father with a crying newborn baby while my wife worked, I can say this lady is completely off. What is making her so miserable is her constant selfish search for her own self-fulfillment and shameless consumerism and fancy house. She could have been a lot more happy if she learned to dial back her expenses so that a single income could easily support her family instead of trying to have it all and all right now.

--> You hear me harp on the difference between opinion and news. Here is a good example of opinion. It even says so, in fact, at the very top in big black letters. I happen to agree with the opinion that Obama has not achieved anything meaningful in all his foreign travels.

--> Bremelanotide (PT-141) appears to be useful for female sexual dysfunction. Side effects include increased blood pressure and flushing. So thee are now two drugs available: bremelanotide and Flibanserin. They work in different ways, but seem to have similar end results with Flibanserin taking longer to act.

--> A lot of you tout Obama's ability at foreign relations. I say he has none. With all his travels, what has her really accomplished? Seriously. What? He may be likable, but that does not mean he enjoys the respect of other world leaders. Obama is a weak leader. Bush may have been disliked, but he had the respect of other world leaders. I don't see that same level with Obama. Largely, they politely ignore him.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,575827,00.html?test=latestnews

--> A really good take on the new libido-enhancing drug, Flibanserin. Low-libido is not well defined and is almost entirely subjective on an individual basis. This is akin to the saying "I'm okay; you're okay." That is medical moral relativism. How about defining libido for different age groups based on global average of sexual desire (not necessarily actual sex, but the *desire* for it) and the frequency of intercourse. Adjust the data to account for sex workers or other "pay for play" type data points. Why has no one done this? It seems simple enough to get a statistical sampling for this data..

-->"No president will ask taxpayers to fund something he won't be around to take credit for." It is time for putting politics aside and make NASA get back on track and in the game. Oh... and there is no "George Bush senior". George Bush the elder is the correct designation. "Conceived in the cold war, reinvented as an emblem of international cooperation, then repeatedly dismissed as a white elephant, the space station has nonetheless come to pass." and even the author of the article calls is a white elephant. ... my comment as posted: "First our authors call the space station a white-elephant. Then they seem to take others to task for the same thing.

There is no "George Bush, Senior". The appropriate designation would be "George Bush, the elder".

The reason we went to The Moon was politics: we had to demonstrate technological superiority to the Soviets. We have no similar threat these days so there is no driving force. --> A new non-hormonal drug to help premenopausal women with low libido. Low libido seems to be defined as 2.8 times per month, on average. This may affect one in 10 women in the U.S.. Short term side effects don't seem to be that bad, but since you are mucking about with the neurological pathways, what are the long term effects? I remember reading in Playboy an article on a variant of the drug Ecstasy (variant now a controlled substance) that made every touch into something erotic feeling. Maybe this drug will become the new party drug.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33963387/ns/health-sexual_health/

--> Sexually transmitted diseases on the rise among teens. And yet, Obama wants to move away from abstinance-only sex education. Seems to me that LESS sex would make for LESS disease. Or maybe I am just being logical and that really has nothing to do with government programs and political agendas.

--> I think that the charges will be dropped if this is really all there is to it. But in my mind, being a single parent should get you a discharge. Becoming pregnant while in service AND IN THEATER should get you discharged. All women entering the military should be required to be on Norplant or some other semi-permanent birth control. There would, of course, be penalties for male soldiers should they inadvertently create life. Wartime is no time to start a family if you are in the military. Family planning should be strict. If a military couple wants to have a child, then one of them needs to leave the service so this sort of thing does not happen.

--> If this international treaty passes, expect the government (in each country) to take full control over the Internet due to various ISPs inability to effectively police. In the USA, if someone is accused of a crime, for example, rape, they can be placed in jail based solely on an accusation and no evidence. Given that precedence, I don't think there is a way around the ISP not shutting off your Internet based solely on a bogus DMCA takedown notice. This treaty seems to be a way to stifle free speech, more than to protect copyright holders. Entire businesses can be shut out of the Net by a simple take down notice. This treaty will, in time, result in a "Great Firewall of China" for the "free" countries of the world and silence the voice of dissidents and that of political free speech.

--> The power of the cloud. PGP has been cracked by brute force. Guess what folks? Encryption is not about keeping your private information secret forever; it is about keeping your private information secret until the time value of the information has expired. Over time, secrets either become moot, or novelty. Solving a murder that happened 200 years ago is likely to have little impact on modern society, for example, even though it may be interesting to know who did it. Lesson to be learned here: use long passwords and key phrases. Currently, a simple (only the letters a-z) 12 letter password costs $1.5 million to crack. Add the numbers 0-9 to a 12 letter password and the cost goes to almost $76 million. Add in special characters (such as @, #, $,%, etc.) and at 10 characters the cost goes to just shy of $960 million. That assumes legitimate means. But what about a botnet? Cost is cheap then.
